Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
Step 1: Connect Your Router to the ONT
Connect the WAN (Internet) port of your D‑Link DSL‑X1852E router to the first port on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT) using an Ethernet cable. In some cases the second port may be used instead — check your Zeronet connection details to confirm which port to use. Ensure the router is powered on and that your computer or mobile device is connected to the router via Wi‑Fi or a LAN cable.
Step 2: Access the Router’s Admin Panel
Open a web browser on a connected device and enter 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into the address bar. Log in using the default username admin and password admin, unless these have already been changed. If you cannot remember the login details, proceed to Step 8 to reset the router.
Step 3: Internet Connection Type and VLAN Settings
Once logged in, navigate to Settings > Internet. Set the WAN Connection Type to Dynamic IP (DHCP). Enable VLAN tagging and enter the following:
- Internet VLAN ID:
10 - Priority:
0
Set the MTU to 1500 or auto. Save the settings once completed.
Step 4: Save the Configuration
After entering the Dynamic IP and VLAN settings, click Save or Apply to confirm the changes. The router may restart automatically to apply the new configuration. Allow a few minutes for the restart to complete.
Step 5: Verify the Internet Connection
Check the WAN or Internet LED indicator on the router. It should be solid green or blue, indicating an active connection. On a connected device, open a website to confirm that your connection is working.
Step 6: Troubleshooting
If your internet connection is not working, restart both the ONT and the router by unplugging them for about 30 seconds and then plugging them back in. Double‑check that the Dynamic IP and VLAN settings are correct and that the Ethernet cable is securely connected to the correct ports.
Step 7: Reset the Router if Required
If you cannot access the router due to forgotten login credentials or misconfiguration, reset it to factory defaults. Press and hold the reset button on the back of the router for about 10–15 seconds using a pin or paperclip until the lights begin to flash. After the router reboots, log in using the default credentials and repeat the setup from Step 2.
