Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
Step 1: Connect Your Router to the ONT
Connect the WAN (Internet) port of your D-Link DSL-2878 router to the correct port on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT) using an Ethernet cable. Ensure the router is powered on and that your computer or mobile device is connected to the router via Wi-Fi or a LAN cable.
Step 2: Access the Router’s Admin Panel
Open a web browser on a connected device and enter 192.168.1.1 into the address bar. Log in using the default username admin and password admin, unless these have already been changed. If you cannot remember your login credentials, proceed to Step 7 to reset the router.
Step 3: Configure the Internet Connection
Once logged in, navigate to Settings > Internet. Set your WAN connection type to Ethernet. Enable VLAN tagging if required by your Zeronet connection. Enter VLAN ID 10. Then set the IP version to IPv4 and the connection type to Dynamic IP (DHCP). Set the MTU to 1500 and save your settings.
Step 4: Save and Apply Settings
After entering the Dynamic IP and VLAN settings, click Save or Apply to confirm the changes. The router may restart automatically to apply the new configuration. Allow a few minutes for the restart to complete.
Step 5: Verify the Internet Connection
Check the WAN/Internet LED on the router. It should be solid green, indicating an active internet connection. On a connected device, open a website to confirm that your internet connection is working.
Step 6: Troubleshooting
If the internet is not working, restart both the ONT and the router by unplugging them for about 30 seconds, then plug them back in. Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected and that the Dynamic IP and VLAN settings are correct.
Step 7: Reset the Router if Required
If you cannot access the router or your settings are incorrect, reset the router to factory defaults. Press and hold the reset button on the back of the router for 10–15 seconds using a pin or paperclip until the lights begin to flash. After the router reboots, log in using the default credentials and repeat the setup from Step 2.
