Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
Step 1: Connect Your Router to the ONT
Connect the WAN (Internet) port of your D-Link DSL‑5300 router to the first port on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT) using an Ethernet cable. In some installations the second port may be used instead — check your Zeronet connection details to confirm which port you should use. Ensure the router is powered on and that your computer or mobile device is connected to the router via Wi‑Fi or a LAN cable.
Step 2: Access the Router’s Admin Panel
Open a web browser on a connected device and enter 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into the address bar. Log in using the default username admin and leave the password blank unless it has been changed. If you cannot remember the login details, proceed to Step 8 to reset the router.
Step 3: Internet Connection Type Settings (DHCP)
Navigate to Settings > Internet > IPv4. Click Advanced Settings to see more options. Set the WAN Access Type to Residential Gateway, then select the Ethernet port on your router that is connected to the ONT. Set the Connection Type to Dynamic IP (DHCP) and click Save to confirm these changes.
Step 4: Configure VLAN Settings
Go to Settings > Internet > VLAN. Enable VLAN tagging and enter the following: Internet VLAN ID: 10 and VLAN Priority: 0. Optional settings such as VoIP VLAN ID 20 and IPTV VLAN ID 30 can remain unchanged. Click Save or Apply to confirm the VLAN configuration.
Step 5: Save and Apply Configuration
After entering the Dynamic IP and VLAN settings, click Save to confirm all changes. The router may restart automatically to apply the configuration. Wait a few minutes for the restart to finish.
Step 6: Verify the Internet Connection
Check that the WAN or Internet LED indicator on the router is solid green, indicating an active connection. On a connected device, open a website to confirm that the connection is working.
Step 7: Troubleshooting
If the internet connection is not working, restart both the ONT and the router by unplugging them for about 30 seconds and then plugging them back in. Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected and the Dynamic IP and VLAN settings are correct.
Step 8: Reset the Router if Required
If you cannot access the router due to forgotten login credentials or misconfiguration, reset it to factory settings. Press and hold the reset button on the back of the router for 10–15 seconds using a pin or paperclip until the lights flash. After the router reboots, log in using the default credentials and repeat the setup from Step 2.
