Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
Step 1: Connect Your Router to the ONT
Connect the LAN 4 port on your D‑Link DSL‑3890 router to the first port on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT) using an Ethernet cable. In some installations the second port may be used instead — check your Zeronet connection details to confirm which port you should use. Ensure the router is powered on and that your computer or mobile device is connected to the router via Wi‑Fi or a LAN cable.
Step 2: Access the Router’s Admin Panel
Open a web browser on a connected device and enter 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into the address bar. Log in using the default username admin and password admin, unless these have already been changed. If you cannot remember your login details, proceed to Step 7 to reset the router.
Step 3: Internet Connection Type and VLAN Settings
Once logged in, navigate to Settings > Internet. Set the WAN Access Type to Residential Gateway and the interface to Eth 0. Enable VLAN tagging and configure the following:
- VLAN ID: 10
- VLAN Priority: 0
Set "My Internet Connection" to Dynamic IP (DHCP). Under Advanced Settings, ensure MTU is set to Auto or 1500, and enable NAT. Save or apply the settings.
Step 4: Save and Apply Settings
After entering the settings, click Save or Apply. The router may restart automatically. Allow a few minutes for the restart to complete.
Step 5: Verify the Internet Connection
Check that the WAN/Internet LED on the router is solid green, indicating an active internet connection. On a connected device, open a website to confirm the connection is working.
Step 6: Troubleshooting
If the internet connection is not working, restart both the ONT and the router by unplugging them for 30 seconds and plugging them back in. Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected and the VLAN and Dynamic IP settings are correct.
Step 7: Reset the Router if Required
If you cannot access the router due to forgotten login credentials or misconfiguration, reset it to factory defaults. Press and hold the reset button on the back of the router for 10–15 seconds using a pin or paperclip until the lights flash. After the router reboots, log in using the default credentials and repeat the setup from Step 2.
