Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
Step 1: Connect Your Router to the ONT
Connect the LAN 4 port of your D-Link DSL‑2900AL AC1900 router to the first port (LAN1 or GE1) on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT) using an Ethernet cable. In some cases, the second port may be used instead — check your Zeronet connection instructions to confirm which port to use. Ensure the router is powered on and that your computer or mobile device is connected via Wi-Fi or a LAN cable.
Step 2: Access the Router’s Admin Panel
Open a web browser on a connected device and enter 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into the address bar. Log in using the default credentials: Username: admin and Password: admin (or check the password printed on the bottom of your router). If you have changed these credentials and cannot remember them, proceed to Step 7 to reset the router.
Step 3: Configure Internet Connection Type and VLAN Settings
Once logged in, follow these steps to configure your internet connection and VLAN settings:
- Navigate to Settings > Internet.
- Set the WAN Access Type to Residential Gateway.
- Click on Advanced Settings and set the Ether WAN Port to Port 4.
- Enable Tagged VLAN and configure the following:
- VLAN ID: 10
- VLAN Priority: 0
- Set “My Internet Connection” to Dynamic IP (DHCP).
- Click Advanced Settings and set the MTU to Auto or 1500.
Click Save or Apply to confirm the changes.
Step 4: Save and Apply Settings
After entering the VLAN and Dynamic IP settings, click Save or Apply. The router may restart automatically. Allow a few minutes for the restart to complete.
Step 5: Verify the Internet Connection
Check the WAN or Internet LED indicator on the router. It should be solid green. On a connected device, try accessing a website to confirm the internet connection is active.
Step 6: Troubleshooting
If the internet connection is not working:
- Restart both the ONT and the router by unplugging them for 30 seconds and then plugging them back in.
- Check that the VLAN and Dynamic IP settings are correct.
- Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected to the correct ports.
Step 7: Reset the Router if Required
If you cannot access the router due to forgotten credentials or misconfiguration, reset the router to factory settings:
- Press and hold the reset button on the back of the router for 10–15 seconds using a pin or paperclip.
- Release the button when the router’s lights start flashing.
- After the router reboots, log in using the default credentials and repeat the setup from Step 2.
