Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
Step 1: Connect Your Router to the ONT
Connect the WAN (Internet) port on your D-Link DIR-878 router to the correct port on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT) using an Ethernet cable. Make sure the router is powered on and that your computer or mobile device is connected to the router via Wi-Fi or a LAN cable.
Step 2: Access the Router Interface
Open a web browser on a connected device and enter dlinkrouter.local or 192.168.0.1 into the address bar. Log in using the default username admin and password admin, unless these have already been changed.
Step 3: Configure the Internet Connection Type
Once logged in, navigate to the Internet settings section. Set the internet connection type to Dynamic IP (DHCP). Set the MTU to 1500 and save the changes.
Step 4: Configure VLAN Settings
Go to the VLAN configuration section in the router settings. Enable VLAN tagging and enter VLAN ID 10 with a priority of 0. Apply the changes.
Step 5: Save and Apply Settings
Save all configuration changes. The router may restart automatically to apply the new settings. Allow a few minutes for the restart to complete.
Step 6: Verify the Internet Connection
Once the router has restarted, check the Internet or WAN indicator light. It should show an active connection. Confirm connectivity by opening a website on a connected device.
Step 7: Basic Troubleshooting
If the internet is not working, power off both the ONT and the router for 30 seconds, then power them back on. Ensure the Ethernet cable is securely connected and that the VLAN and Dynamic IP settings are correct.
Step 8: Reset the Router if Required
If you are unable to access the router or the settings are incorrect, reset the router to factory defaults. Press and hold the reset button on the back of the router for 10 to 15 seconds until the lights begin to flash. Once reset, log in using the default credentials and repeat the setup from Step 2.
