Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
Step 1 – Connect Your Router to the ONT
Using an Ethernet cable, connect the Internet (WAN) port on your Netgear Nighthawk RS100 router to the correct LAN port on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This is usually LAN1 or GE1. Check your Zeronet welcome instructions to confirm which port to use. Ensure the router is powered on and that your computer or mobile device is connected to the router via Wi‑Fi or a LAN cable.
Step 2 – Access the Router Admin Page
Open a web browser on a connected device and enter http://192.168.1.1 or http://www.routerlogin.net into the address bar. Log in using the default credentials: Username: admin, Password: password. If these credentials have been changed and cannot be remembered, proceed to Step 8 to reset the router.
Step 3 – Configure the Internet Connection Type
After logging in, go to the Basic menu and select Internet. Set “Does your internet require a login?” to No. Set the Internet IP Address option to Get Dynamically from ISP (DHCP). Set the DNS option to Get Automatically from ISP. For Router MAC Address, select Use Default Address. Click Apply to save the changes.
Step 4 – Configure VLAN Settings
Navigate to Advanced > Advanced Setup > VLAN / Bridge Settings. Enable VLAN/Bridge Group and VLAN Tagging. Click Add and enter the following: Name, Internet VLAN ID: 10, Priority: 0. Select the Ethernet LAN port, then click Add to confirm.
Step 5 – Apply and Save Settings
Click Apply to save all settings. The router may restart automatically. If it does not, wait a few minutes for the changes to take effect.
Step 6 – Verify the Internet Connection
Check the WAN/Internet LED on the router; it should be solid white. On a connected device, open a web page to confirm the internet connection is active.
Step 7 – Troubleshooting
If the internet connection is not working, power off both the ONT and the router and leave them unplugged for at least 30 seconds. Power the ONT on first, wait for its lights to stabilise, then power on the router. Ensure all Ethernet cables are securely connected and that the VLAN and DHCP settings are correct.
Step 8 – Factory Reset (If Required)
If you cannot access the router due to forgotten credentials or misconfiguration, perform a factory reset. Locate the reset button on the back of the router and press and hold it for 10–15 seconds using a pin or paperclip. Release the button once the router lights flash. The router will reboot and return to factory settings, allowing you to repeat the setup from Step 2.
