Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
Step 1 – Connect Your Router to the ONT
Using an Ethernet cable, connect the Internet (WAN) port on your Netgear Nighthawk AX4 RAX36S AX3000 router to the correct LAN port on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This is usually LAN1 or GE1. If a different port is required, check your Zeronet welcome instructions. Make sure the router is powered on and that your computer or mobile device is connected to the router via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Step 2 – Access the Router Admin Page
On a connected device, open a web browser and enter http://www.routerlogin.net or http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar. When prompted, log in using the default credentials. The username is admin and the password is password. If these details have been changed and you cannot log in, proceed to Step 8 to reset the router.
Step 3 – Configure the Internet Connection Type
After logging in, navigate to the Internet settings under the Basic menu. Set the Internet IP Address option to Get Dynamically from ISP (DHCP). Leave all other settings at their default values unless advised otherwise by Zeronet. Click Apply to save the changes.
Step 4 – Configure VLAN Settings
Go to the Advanced menu, then select Advanced Setup and open VLAN / Bridge Settings. Enable VLAN or Bridge Group and turn on VLAN tagging. Set the Internet VLAN ID to 10 with a priority value of 0. Ensure the Internet service is assigned to the WAN port, then click Apply.
Step 5 – Apply and Save Settings
Once the VLAN settings are saved, the router may restart automatically. If it does not restart, wait up to two minutes for the configuration changes to take effect before continuing.
Step 6 – Check Internet Connection
After the router finishes applying the settings, check the Internet or WAN status light on the router to confirm connectivity. On your connected device, try loading a webpage to verify that the internet connection is working.
Step 7 – Troubleshooting
If the internet is not working, power off both the ONT and the router and leave them unplugged for at least 30 seconds. Power the ONT back on first and wait for its lights to stabilise, then power on the router. Confirm all Ethernet cables are securely connected and that the DHCP and VLAN settings were entered correctly.
Step 8 – Factory Reset (If Required)
If you are unable to access the router or the configuration is incorrect, perform a factory reset. Locate the reset button on the back of the router and press and hold it for 10 to 15 seconds using a paperclip. Release the button once the router lights begin flashing. The router will reboot and return to factory settings, allowing you to repeat the setup from Step 2.
