Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
Step 1 – Connect Your Router to the ONT
Using an Ethernet cable, connect the WAN port on your Netgear Nighthawk Pro Gaming XR300 router to the correct LAN port on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This is usually LAN1 or GE1. If a different port is required, refer to your Zeronet welcome instructions. Ensure the router is powered on and that your computer or mobile device is connected to the router via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Step 2 – Access the Router Admin Page
On a connected device, open a web browser and enter http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 into the address bar. Log in using the default credentials. The username is admin and the password is password. If these details have been changed and you cannot log in, continue to Step 8 to reset the router.
Step 3 – Configure Internet Connection Type
After logging in, go to the Internet Setup page under the Advanced or Settings menu. Set the Internet Connection Type to Dynamic IP (DHCP). No username or password is required for this connection. Click Apply to save the changes.
Step 4 – Configure VLAN Settings
Navigate to the VLAN or Bridge settings under Advanced Setup. Enable VLAN tagging. Set the Internet VLAN ID to 10 and the priority value to 0. Ensure the Internet service is assigned to the WAN port, then click Apply to save the configuration.
Step 5 – Apply and Save Settings
Once the settings have been applied, the router may restart automatically. If it does not restart, allow up to two minutes for the configuration to take effect before continuing.
Step 6 – Check Internet Connection
After the router has finished applying the settings, check the Internet or WAN status light on the router to confirm connectivity. On your connected device, open a web page to verify that the internet connection is working.
Step 7 – Troubleshooting
If the internet connection is not working, power off both the ONT and the router and leave them unplugged for at least 30 seconds. Power the ONT back on first and wait for the lights to stabilise, then turn the router back on. Confirm all cables are securely connected and that the DHCP and VLAN settings were entered correctly.
Step 8 – Factory Reset (If Required)
If you are unable to access the router or the configuration is incorrect, perform a factory reset. Locate the reset button on the back of the router and press and hold it for 10 to 15 seconds using a paperclip. Release the button once the router lights begin flashing. The router will reboot and return to factory settings, allowing you to repeat the setup from Step 2.
