Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
Step 1 – Connect Your Router to the ONT
Using an Ethernet cable, connect the Internet (WAN) port on your Netgear Nighthawk RAX50 AX5400 router to the correct LAN port on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This is usually LAN1 or GE1. If a different port is required, refer to your Zeronet welcome instructions. Make sure the router is powered on and that your computer or mobile device is connected to the router via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Step 2 – Access the Router Admin Page
On a connected device, open a web browser and enter http://192.168.1.1 or http://www.routerlogin.net into the address bar. Log in using the default credentials: Username: admin, Password: password. If these credentials have been changed and cannot be remembered, proceed to Step 8 to reset the router.
Step 3 – Configure the Internet Connection Type
After logging in, navigate to the Internet settings under the Basic menu. Set the Internet IP Address to Get Dynamically from ISP (DHCP). Leave all other settings at their default values unless instructed otherwise by Zeronet. Click Apply to save the changes.
Step 4 – Configure VLAN Settings
Navigate to Advanced, then Advanced Setup, and open VLAN / Bridge Settings. Enable VLAN tagging. Set the Internet VLAN ID to 10 and the priority value to 0. Ensure the Internet service is assigned to the WAN port, then click Apply to save the configuration.
Step 5 – Apply and Save Settings
After saving the VLAN and DHCP settings, the router may restart automatically to apply the new configuration. If it does not restart, wait a few minutes for the changes to take effect before continuing.
Step 6 – Verify the Internet Connection
Once the router has restarted, check the Internet or WAN status light to confirm connectivity. On your connected device, open a web page to ensure the internet connection is active.
Step 7 – Troubleshooting
If the internet connection is not working, power off both the ONT and the router and leave them unplugged for at least 30 seconds. Power the ONT back on first and wait for the lights to stabilise, then power on the router. Confirm that all Ethernet cables are securely connected and that the DHCP and VLAN settings were entered correctly.
Step 8 – Factory Reset (If Required)
If you cannot access the router due to forgotten credentials or misconfiguration, perform a factory reset. Locate the reset button on the back of the router and press and hold it for 10–15 seconds using a pin or paperclip. Release the button once the router lights begin flashing. The router will reboot and return to factory settings, allowing you to repeat the setup from Step 2.
