Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
Step 1 – Connect Your Router to the ONT
Using an Ethernet cable, connect the Internet (WAN) port on your Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 router to the correct LAN port on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This is usually LAN1 or GE1. If you are unsure which port to use, check your Zeronet setup confirmation. Make sure the router is powered on, and that your computer or mobile device is connected to the router via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
Step 2 – Access the Router Admin Page
Open a web browser on a connected device and enter http://www.routerlogin.net or http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar. When prompted, log in using the default login details. The username is admin and the password is password. If these details have been changed and you cannot log in, the router may need to be reset in Step 8.
Step 3 – Set the Internet Connection Type
Once logged in, navigate to the Internet settings under the Basic menu. Set the Internet IP Address option to Get Dynamically from ISP (DHCP). Leave all other settings at their default values unless instructed otherwise by Zeronet. Click Apply to save the changes.
Step 4 – Configure VLAN Settings
Go to the Advanced menu, then select Advanced Setup and open VLAN / Bridge Settings. Enable VLAN or Bridge Group. Turn on VLAN tagging and set the Internet VLAN ID to 10 with a priority value of 0. Ensure the Internet service is mapped to the WAN port. Click Apply to save the configuration.
Step 5 – Apply and Save Settings
After saving the VLAN configuration, the router may briefly restart. If it does not restart automatically, wait up to two minutes for the settings to apply before continuing.
Step 6 – Check Internet Connection
Once the router has finished applying the settings, check the Internet or WAN light on the router. This should show an active connection. On your device, open a web page to confirm that the internet connection is working.
Step 7 – Troubleshooting
If the internet is not working, power off both the ONT and the router. Leave them unplugged for at least 30 seconds, then power on the ONT first. Once the ONT lights stabilise, turn the router back on. Confirm all cables are securely connected and that the VLAN and DHCP settings were entered correctly.
Step 8 – Factory Reset (If Needed)
If you cannot access the router or the configuration is incorrect, perform a factory reset. Locate the reset button on the back of the router, press and hold it for 10 to 15 seconds using a paperclip, then release it. The router will reboot and return to its default settings. You can then repeat the setup process starting from Step 2.
