If your internet isn’t working over a wired (Ethernet) connection, follow these steps:
1. Check the cable connections
-
Make sure the Ethernet cable is securely plugged into both your modem/router and your device.
-
If available, try a different port on the modem/router.
2. Test with another cable
-
Ethernet cables can get damaged over time.
-
Swap it out with another cable to rule out a faulty one.
3. Restart your equipment
-
Turn your modem/router off at the wall for 30 seconds, then switch it back on.
-
Restart your computer or device as well.
4. Try another device
-
Connect a different device (such as another laptop or desktop) with the Ethernet cable.
-
If the second device works, the issue is likely with your original device’s network settings.
5. Check for lights
-
Most Ethernet ports have small lights that blink when a connection is active.
-
If there are no lights, the port, cable, or device may not be working correctly.
6. Set up your network adapter
Your device needs to recognise the Ethernet connection:
On Windows:
-
Click the Start Menu → type Control Panel → open Network and Sharing Centre.
-
Select Change adapter settings.
-
Right-click Ethernet → choose Enable (if it’s disabled).
-
If it’s already enabled, right-click Ethernet → Diagnose to run Windows troubleshooting.
On Mac:
-
Go to System Settings (or System Preferences) → Network.
-
Select Ethernet from the list on the left.
-
Make sure the status says Connected. If not, click the gear ⚙️ icon and choose Make Service Active.
-
If it still doesn’t connect, click Advanced… → TCP/IP tab → select Renew DHCP Lease.
7. Update or reset network settings
-
Make sure your device’s software is up to date.
-
If the adapter is still not working, you may need to reset your network settings to restore defaults.
