When your internet connection suddenly slows to a crawl or drops entirely, the instinct is
usually to blame your internet provider. However, the true culprit is often sitting right
inside your home. WiFi relies on radio waves to send data to your devices, and those
waves are surprisingly delicate. Everyday objects, decor choices, and household
appliances can block, bounce, or scatter your signal in ways you might never expect.
Here is a look at some of the stranger things hiding in plain sight that could be ruining
your broadband connection.
Fish tanks and aquariums
Water is one of the most effective natural absorbers of radio frequency signals. If you
have a large aquarium positioned between your router and your living room sofa, your
WiFi signal is forced to fight its way through a literal wall of liquid. The water rapidly
absorbs the radio energy, leaving you with weak coverage and random dropouts on the
other side.
Large mirrors and mirrored wardrobes
Mirrors reflect much more than just your visual image. Most household mirrors are
manufactured with a thin coat of metal, usually aluminum or silver, applied to the back
of the glass. Radio waves cannot easily pass through metal, so when your router's
signal hits a large mirror or a mirrored wardrobe door, it bounces off and scatters across
the room in unpredictable directions.
Underfloor heating systems
If your WiFi works perfectly on the ground floor but vanishes the moment you walk
upstairs, your heating system might be to blame. Radiant underfloor heating uses a
dense network of metal coils or water-filled pipes running beneath the floorboards.
Together, the metal framework and circulating liquid create a massive shield that
prevents WiFi signals from traveling vertically through your house.
Running microwave ovens
Microwave ovens operate on the 2.4 GHz frequency band, which happens to be the
exact same frequency used by older WiFi routers and many modern smart devices.
Even a well-sealed microwave can leak a tiny fraction of a watt of radiation while
heating food. Because a standard WiFi router broadcasts at a very low power output, a
running microwave easily overpowers the signal and disrupts nearby connections.
Dense houseplants and book collections
Living plant tissue is filled with water, which means a collection of large, leafy indoor
plants sitting directly in front of your router acts like a sponge for radio waves. Similarly,
a massive floor-to-ceiling bookshelf packed tightly with paper creates a thick, solid
barrier. While a single book will not cause an issue, hundreds of dense pages stacked
together will scatter high-frequency wireless signals.
Baby monitors and bluetooth gear
Many non-WiFi electronic devices share the crowded 2.4 GHz airspace. Baby monitors
transmit continuous audio or video signals on this frequency, creating constant
background noise. Meanwhile, Bluetooth accessories constantly hop across frequencies
up to 1,600 times per second. When several of these devices are active near your
router, they constantly collide with your WiFi signal and cause temporary lag spikes.
How to fix your connection
Understanding how radio waves interact with your home environment makes
troubleshooting a weak connection much easier. You do not necessarily need a faster
internet plan to fix poor coverage. Instead, try elevating your router off the floor, keeping
it out of enclosed cabinets, and maintaining a clear line of sight to your main living
areas. Switching your devices to the less congested 5 GHz or 6 GHz network bands will
also bypass many of these everyday signal thieves and keep your connection running
