Spring is here, the days are getting longer and there's no shortage of good reasons to put your feet up and watch something. Whether you're after a gripping drama, a bit of fantasy, a crime thriller, comedy or something easy to binge, there's plenty arriving on New Zealand streaming services this spring.
We've rounded up some of the shows and movies worth adding to your watchlist, including a few old favourites, returning hits and some brand-new releases.
For the drama fans
The Gilded Age on HBO Max
If you love lavish costumes, enormous houses and beautifully complicated people behaving badly, The Gilded Age is an easy pick. The period drama returns later this year, so spring is a good time to catch up or revisit the previous seasons.
Grey's Anatomy on Disney+
Some things never go out of fashion. Grey's Anatomy remains a reliable choice when you want a show you can settle into, with plenty of seasons to keep you occupied.
Believe Me TVNZ+
Looking for something closer to home? Believe Me is available on TVNZ+ and is another option for your spring watchlist. TVNZ+ currently has a broad mix of drama, entertainment and international titles available to stream.
For something with a bit more action
The Gentlemen on Netflix
Guy Ritchie's stylish crime series is back for season two, continuing the story of Eddie and the increasingly complicated empire he has inherited. If you enjoyed the first season, this one belongs firmly on the list.
Reacher on Netflix
If you like your entertainment with a healthy dose of action, Reacher is another solid binge. It's one of those shows that's easy to get stuck into when you only planned to watch one episode.
Neagley on Prime Video
And if you're a Reacher fan, there's another reason to stay tuned. Neagley, the new spin-off centred on Frances Neagley, arrives on Prime Video and expands the world of the series with a new story of its own.
For a little nostalgia
Harry Potter on HBO Max
Sometimes you don't need something new. The Harry Potter films are the perfect excuse for a weekend marathon, whether you're watching them for the first time or returning to Hogwarts for the hundredth.
New shows worth checking out
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story on Netflix
Netflix is bringing another instalment of its Monster anthology this spring, this time turning its attention to the infamous Lizzie Borden case. If true crime and dark historical drama are your thing, this could be one to add to the list.
Slow Horses, Season 6 on Apple TV
Gary Oldman and the dysfunctional spies of Slough House are back for another season of the much-loved spy thriller. Season six is one of the bigger returning shows of September.
The Paper, Season 2 on TVNZ +
Missing The Office? The Paper returns for season two, following the staff of a struggling Midwestern newspaper. It's another option for anyone after something lighter with plenty of workplace chaos.
Something for the whole family
Toy Story 5 on Disney+
If you're after something everyone can watch, Toy Story 5 is one to look out for on Disney+. It's among the major new Disney+ titles arriving this year.
So, what are you watching first?
From sprawling period dramas and action-packed thrillers to nostalgic favourites and brand-new releases, spring is looking pretty good for staying in.
Grab the snacks, pick a streaming service and settle in. Just don't blame us when "one episode" turns into six.
