There is nothing more maddening - everything else is working perfectly, but one device is crawling. Before you blame your broadband, take a beat. If your phone, TV and laptop are happily streaming, scrolling and browsing away, but one particular device is struggling, the problem is probably closer to home.
It might be the device, not your broadband
When your broadband connection is working normally, all your connected devices share the same connection. So, if most of them are behaving themselves and one isn't, there are a few likely culprits.
Your device is doing too much
A device that's running lots of apps, tabs or background processes can start to feel sluggish. Your browser might have dozens of tabs open, or apps could be quietly using resources in the background. Try closing anything you're not using and give the device a quick restart. Yes, the classic "have you tried turning it off and on again?" really does work surprisingly often.
Your browser needs a clean-up
If it's mainly web browsing that's slow, your browser could be the culprit. Over time, browsers collect cached files, cookies and other data. While this can make some things load faster, a browser that's carrying around years of digital clutter can sometimes start to struggle. Try clearing your browser's cache and cookies, then see if things improve.
You're running an old version of your software
Software updates aren't just about getting the latest features. They can also include performance improvements, bug fixes and security updates. Check whether your device, operating system and browser are all up to date. If an update has been waiting patiently for weeks, this might be the nudge it needed.
Your device is running low on storage
A nearly-full hard drive or phone can affect how smoothly your device runs. Have a look at your storage and remove anything you no longer need. Old downloads, duplicate photos and apps you haven't opened since 2021 are all good candidates.
It could be the WiFi, not the device
If the device is slow only in certain parts of your home, WiFi coverage could be the issue. Try using the same device closer to your modem. If it suddenly springs back to life, your broadband connection may be perfectly fine and the problem could simply be how well the WiFi signal is reaching that room. You can also run a speed test in different rooms to compare the results.
The easiest way to narrow it down with these tests
Try another device in the same spot
If another device works well, your broadband connection is probably not the problem.
Take the slow device closer to your modem
If it speeds up, WiFi coverage could be the culprit.
Try the slow device somewhere else
If it remains slow wherever you use it, it's worth looking at the device itself, including its storage, software, browser and background apps.
So, is your broadband actually slow?
Not necessarily. When one device is struggling while everything else is working normally, it's often a sign that the issue is specific to that device or its WiFi connection. The good news? That means you may not need to do anything to your broadband at all. A little digital housekeeping could be all it takes to get that troublesome device back up to speed.
