Backing up your phone is one of those things most of us mean to do, then forget about until something goes wrong. The good news is both iPhone and Android make it pretty easy to keep your photos and contacts safe in the background.
Why it’s worth doing
Your phone is where the good stuff lives. Photos from birthdays, holidays, kids growing up, plus all your key contacts. If your phone gets lost, broken, or upgraded, a proper backup means you do not lose everything with it.
iPhone backups
Photos
Most iPhone users rely on iCloud Photos.
To turn it on:
- Go to Settings
- Tap your name at the top
- Select iCloud
- Tap Photos
- Switch on iCloud Photos
Once it is on, your photos will automatically back up when you are on Wi-Fi and your phone is charging.
If you prefer a backup option that works across devices, you can also use Google Photos:
- Download Google Photos from the App Store
- Sign in with your Google account
- Turn on Backup
Contacts
Your contacts usually sit safely inside iCloud.
To check:
- Go to Settings
- Tap your Apple ID
- Tap iCloud
- Turn on Contacts
That way your contacts stay synced across all your Apple devices.
You can also store them in Google if you want a second layer of backup by adding your Google account in Settings and turning on Contacts sync.
Android backups
Photos
Most Android phones use Google Photos.
To set it up:
- Open Google Photos
- Tap your profile icon
- Go to Photos settings
- Select Backup
- Turn it on
You can choose whether to save in original quality or a slightly compressed version to save space.
Contacts
On Android, contacts are usually backed up through your Google account using Google Contacts.
To check:
- Open Settings
- Tap Google
- Go to Backup or Account Services
- Make sure Contacts sync is turned on
Once that is on, your contacts will automatically follow you whenever you log into a new phone.
A few extra backup tips
If you want to be extra safe:
- Use Google Drive for important files or documents
- Check your phone is backing up over Wi-Fi so it does not chew through data
- Do a quick review every so often, especially before upgrading your phone
Wrap up
Once it is set up, it just runs in the background. Your photos and contacts stay safe without you needing to think about it, which is exactly how it should be.
