With 3G networks being switched off across New Zealand, some older phones may stop working for calls and texts. The good news is you can check your phone yourself in just a couple of minutes, without needing to contact your mobile provider.
The easiest way to check your phone
The simplest test is to see whether your phone can make calls over 4G, also known as VoLTE or 4G Calling. Once 3G is turned off, this is how calls will be made.
Put your phone into 4G-only mode and then try making a call.
If the call goes through, your phone supports 4G calling and should continue to work.
If the call fails or your phone tries to drop to 3G, your device may be affected by the shutdown.
How to check your settings
You can also check directly in your phone’s settings to see if 4G calling (VoLTE) is enabled.
On iPhone:
- Open Settings
- Tap Mobile
- Tap Mobile Data Options
- Tap Voice & Data
- Make sure 4G or LTE is selected
- Ensure VoLTE or 4G Calling is turned on
On Android:
- Open Settings
- Tap Connections or Mobile Network (this may vary by phone)
- Tap Mobile Networks
- Tap Preferred Network Type and select 4G/LTE only
- Make sure VoLTE or 4G Calling is switched on
Quick SMS check
Most providers also offer a free way to check your device by sending a text.
Send “3G” to 550 from the phone you want to test. It can take a few minutes to get a response, but the reply will tell you whether your phone is ready for the 3G shutdown or if you need to take action.
Other signs your phone is ready
If you see VoLTE or 4G Calling displayed when you make a call, that is a good sign. Phones that are 4G-only or 5G-capable are generally fine. Most issues affect much older smartphones and basic feature phones.
One thing to keep in mind
Some phones support VoLTE in theory but do not have it enabled for New Zealand networks, especially older or imported models. If your phone cannot make a call in 4G-only mode, it may be time to check your options.
Taking a few minutes to test now can help you avoid surprises later and make sure you stay connected when 3G is switched off.
