Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
1. Connect your router to the ONT
Use an Ethernet cable to connect the WAN port on your Google Nest H2D router (marked with a globe icon) to the active LAN port on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This is usually LAN1 or GE1. Make sure the router is powered on.
2. Install the Google Home app
Download and install the Google Home app on your mobile device. You can find it on the Google Play Store for Android devices or the Apple App Store for iOS devices using the links below. Sign in with your Google account. If you do not already have a home set up in the app, follow the prompts to create one.
Android: Google Home on Google Play Store
iOS: Google Home on Apple App Store
3. Start setting up the router
Open the Google Home app and tap the plus icon, then select Set up device and choose New device. The app will search for your Google Nest H2D router.
4. Scan the QR code
When prompted, scan the QR code on the bottom of the router. If scanning is not possible, choose the option to continue without scanning and manually enter the setup key printed on the device.
5. Create your Wi-Fi network
Follow the on-screen instructions to name your Wi-Fi network and create a password. The router will apply the settings and create your wireless network. This may take a few minutes.
6. Confirm internet connection
The Google Home app will automatically check for an internet connection using the default connection type. Wait until the app confirms that your network is online before continuing.
7. Test your connection
Connect a device to your new Wi-Fi network and open a website to confirm that your internet connection is working correctly.
8. Reset the router if required
If setup fails or the router cannot connect, you can reset it to factory settings. Press and hold the reset button on the bottom of the router for about 10 seconds until the light flashes. Allow the router to restart, then repeat the setup process starting from Step 3.
