Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
1. Connect your router to the ONT
Use an Ethernet cable to connect the Ethernet port on your eero 6 to the active LAN port on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This is usually labelled LAN1 or GE1. Make sure the eero is powered on and your mobile device is ready for setup.
2. Install the eero app
Download and install the eero app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. The eero router is configured entirely through the app and does not use a web-based admin page.
3. Create or sign in to an eero account
Open the eero app and sign in with your existing eero account, or follow the prompts to create a new account using your email address and mobile number.
4. Start the gateway setup
In the app, tap to add a new eero and follow the on-screen instructions. The app will search for your eero 6 and guide you through connecting it as the main gateway device.
5. Configure internet settings (if required)
The eero app will attempt to connect automatically. If prompted to configure ISP settings, enter the required details.
If a VLAN ID is required:
- Open the eero app and go to Settings.
- Select Network Settings, then ISP Settings.
- Enable VLAN tagging and set the VLAN ID to 10.
- Save the changes and allow the eero to apply the settings.
6. Set up your Wi-Fi network
Choose a Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password when prompted. This will be the network your devices connect to once setup is complete.
7. Complete setup and test connection
Wait for the eero to finish configuring and come online. Once the app indicates the connection is active, test the internet by browsing a website or running a speed test on a connected device.
