Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
Step 1: Connect Your Router to the ONT
Connect the LAN 1 port on your AVM FRITZ!Box 7490 to the appropriate port on your Optical Network Terminal using an Ethernet cable. Ensure the router is powered on and your computer or mobile device is connected to the router via Wi-Fi or a LAN cable.
Step 2: Access the Router Interface
Open a web browser on a connected device and enter fritz.box or 192.168.178.1 into the address bar. When prompted, enter the router password. This is usually printed on the label on the router unless it has been changed.
Step 3: Open Internet Settings
Once logged in, navigate to Internet and then Account Information. When asked to select your internet service provider, choose Other Internet Service Provider and put the name Zeronet.
Step 4: Configure the Connection Type
Set the connection type to Connection to an external modem or router. Set the operation mode to Establish own connection to the internet. Select No when asked whether account information is required.
Step 5: Enable VLAN Settings
Enable the option to use VLAN for internet access. Enter VLAN ID 10. Leave all other VLAN fields at their default values, then apply the changes.
Step 6: Apply and Save Settings
After completing the internet and VLAN configuration, apply the settings. The router may restart automatically. Allow several minutes for the router to reboot and establish the connection.
Step 7: Check the Internet Connection
Once the router has restarted, check the Internet status page to confirm the connection shows as active. You can also test the connection by opening a website on a connected device.
Step 8: Reset the Router If Needed
If the router does not connect or you cannot access the interface, reset it to factory settings by pressing and holding the reset button for 10 to 15 seconds using a paperclip. Wait for the router to reboot, then repeat the setup steps.
