Ka pai! You’ve chosen to use your own router, which is great — it helps reduce e-waste and is better for the environment. Because this is a BYO router, we won’t be able to provide hands-on support for setup, as there are too many different models on the market. That said, we’ve put together this guide to help you get connected. If you run into any issues, we recommend contacting the retailer or manufacturer for support. Alternatively, if you’d like to use one of our Zeronet routers, get in touch with our team and we’ll happily organise that for you.
Applicable Router Models
This setup guide is for the following TP‑Link routers:
- TP‑Link Archer C3150 AC3150
- TP‑Link Archer C3200
- TP‑Link Archer C4000 AC4000
1. Connect Your Router to the ONT
Connect the WAN (Internet) port of your TP‑Link router to the first port (LAN1 or GE1) on your Optical Network Terminal (ONT) using an ethernet cable. Sometimes the second port may be used instead of the first — check your Welcome email instructions to confirm which port you should use. Ensure the router is powered on and that your computer or smartphone is connected to the router via Wi‑Fi or a LAN cable.
2. Access the Router’s Admin Panel
On a device connected to the router, open a web browser and enter 192.168.0.1 (or http://tplinkwifi.net) into the address bar. You will be prompted to log in. The default credentials are:
- Username:
admin - Password:
admin
If you have changed the default credentials and cannot remember them, proceed to Step 8 to reset the router.
3. Set Internet Connection Type (DHCP)
Once logged in:
- Navigate to Advanced > Network > Internet.
- Set the Connection Type to Dynamic IP (DHCP).
- Click the Advanced arrow and configure:
- MTU: 1500
- MAC Address: Use Default MAC
- Click Save or Apply to confirm.
4. Configure VLAN Settings
To configure VLAN tagging (required for most NZ fibre connections):
- Go to Advanced > Network > IPTV/VLAN.
- Enable IPTV/VLAN.
- Set ISP Profile to NZ UFB (or Custom if NZ UFB is not listed).
- If Custom is selected, enter:
- VLAN ID: 10
- Priority: 0
- Tick 802.1Q Tag.
- Click Save to confirm.
5. Save the Configuration
After entering the VLAN and DHCP settings, click Save or Apply to commit the changes. The router may restart automatically — wait a few minutes for the process to complete.
6. Verify the Internet Connection
Check the WAN/Internet LED on the router — it should be solid green if the connection is active. On a connected device, try opening a website to confirm that the internet is working.
7. Troubleshooting (If Needed)
If the internet connection is not working:
- Restart both the ONT and the router by unplugging them for 30 seconds and then plugging them back in.
- Double‑check the VLAN and DHCP settings in the router admin panel.
- Ensure the ethernet cable is securely connected to the correct ports (WAN on the router, first port on the ONT).
8. Reset the Router (If Required)
If you cannot access the router due to forgotten credentials or misconfiguration:
- Locate the reset button on the back of the router.
- Press and hold the reset button for 10–15 seconds using a pin or paperclip.
- Release the button once the router lights flash. The router will reboot to factory settings.
- Log in using default credentials (
admin/admin) and repeat setup from Step 2.
